The Languages Training Center is a specialized educational unit operating at the Azerbaijan State Agrarian University. The center was established on September 13, 2024, in accordance with the university's Internationalization policy, by the decision of the ADAU Scientific Council, with the aim of developing the language skills of students and employees, expanding international exchange and cooperation opportunities, and becoming the main language center of the region.
It first began operating at ADAU in 1929 under the name of the Department of Languages. In the first years of its operation, the department taught Turkish (Azerbaijani) and Russian languages.
The department was headed by the prominent Azerbaijani poet, professor Ahmad Javad Akhundzadeh until 1934. The first teachers of the department were I.A.Agayev, S.M.Samadov, A.J.Orujaliyev, I.P.Lukyanov and E.A.Pachevič. In 1932, I.Z.Gayibov, Y.M.Sharifov and I.Ustinov were invited to the department. In the 1930s, separate courses in foreign languages (German and English) were also taught.
The head of those courses was Friedrich Shiman, and the members were P.Bogdanov, Rash-Gilson, B.Barukhovsky, K.P.Klenebskaya and Alnikov. In 1934-1936, the following teachers taught at the department of general languages, including the foreign language course: J.M.Akhundzade, I.A.Aghayev, A.M. Gamarli, Y.M. Sharifov, I.Z.Gayibov, M.I. Hajiyev, K.V. Klenevskaya, A.A. Askerov, B.G. Klyundt, P.R. Bogdanov, A. Suleymanov, Jafarov, and L.P. Polyakov.
In 1938, L.P. Polyakov was elected head of the Department of Russian and Azerbaijani Languages. In 1939-1949, Ismayil Gayibov headed the Department of Languages. During these years, highly qualified teachers such as P.G. Aleksandrov, E.N. Drachinskaya, A.N. Klimova, T.M. Bidmont and A.M. Gismatulina were invited to the Department. In 1956, Yusif Sharifov was appointed temporary head of the Department of Languages, and then Sona Hashimova was elected to the same position.
At that time, the department was staffed by T.M. Vidmont, I.R. Nikitina, S.A. Safikurdskaya, S.K. Fattahova, S.R. Usubov, P. Korotkova, S.A. Ivanova, O.A. Osmanov. In 1963, the Department of Languages was divided into separate departments for Russian and foreign languages, and during this period, mainly national personnel taught foreign languages. In 1963-1971, the Department of Foreign Languages was headed by Sabir Usubov. In 1963-1981, the Department of Russian Language was headed by S.A. Hashimova, in 1972-1982, the Department of Foreign Languages was headed by Aslan Naghiyev, in 1982-1985, Osman Osmanov, in 1982-1997, the Department of Russian Language was headed by Associate Professor Isgander Isganderov.
In 1987, the Russian and Foreign Languages Departments were merged and renamed the “Languages Department”, and in 1990, the Languages Department was again divided into the “Azerbaijani Language-Foreign Languages” and Russian Language Departments. Associate Professor Eynaddin Mammadov was elected head of the “Azerbaijani Language and Foreign Languages” Department, and Associate Professor Iskander Iskanderov was elected head of the Russian Language Department. In 2005-2024, the Languages Department was headed by Associate Professor Aida Hasanova.
On September 13, 2024, by the decision of the University Academic Council, the Languages Department was renamed the “Languages Teaching Center”. Currently, Azerbaijani, Russian, English, German and French languages are taught at the Languages Teaching Center. Currently, 58 teachers and 9 teaching assistants work at the center.
The Center bases its activities on the principles of democracy, openness, transparency, collegiality and impartiality. The Center's activities aim to improve the teaching of foreign languages at the university and to implement a modern language teaching model that meets international standards. As an independent structural unit, the Center carries out educational, methodological, scientific and administrative activities. The Center is headed by a director, who is appointed by order of the ADAU rector.
The Language Training Center aims to play an important role in increasing the international reputation of ADAU and integrating students/faculty into the global educational space. The center will expand its activities in the direction of training based on modern methods, preparation for language exams, language training for international programs and trainer development. One of the strategic goals in the future is to become a leading language training center both within the university and at the regional level.
● The areas of activity of the Language Training Center are as follows:
-Teaching foreign languages: Teaching English, Russian, French and German – for academic and professional purposes;
-Specialized language training: Terminological and scientific language training adapted to the agricultural sector;
-Preparation for language exams;
-Assessment of language skills;
-Training and seminars: Training and methodological seminars for teachers on modern language teaching methodologies.
● The main goals set by the Language Teaching Center:
-To contribute to the internationalization of teaching and scientific activities at the University;
-To improve the communication and written expression skills of students and teaching staff in foreign languages;
-To provide preparation for joining international programs;
-To formulate and implement the language policy of ADAU;
-To create an efficient and innovative learning environment based on modern pedagogical technologies.
● Goals for the future
- To expand teaching opportunities in foreign languages at the University;
- International cooperation: To implement joint projects with universities;
- Electronic learning resources: To organize teaching through online courses, e-platforms and mobile applications;
- Language policy and quality assurance: To implement unified language standards and monitoring mechanisms across the University.
